INTRODUCTION:
The Medieval period starts with the entry of Muslim conquerors in India. Talking about Indian history, the medieval age was scrutinized to be the “Dark Age” for women. Only a few women are there, who became the ruler and reflect their capabilities. One is Razia Sultan who engross the throne of Delhi. Some other legendary women are Gulbadan Begum, Nurjahan, Jahan Ara , Mumtaj Mahal who became famous because of their intellectual talents, aesthetic values.
Jija Bai, the mother of Shivajee who sacrificed her life in grooming her son as a yodhdha against the Mughal rule. She was an intractable woman. Mughal period comes up with many changes in women’s lives and leads them to inferiority in comparison to men. Society upholds the dominancy of men. Now, at this stage, the status of women started falling, society imposing customs on women like Sati Pratha, child marriage, widow remarriage, etc. Restriction to the study of Vedas and not go for higher studies started imposing.
PHILOSOPHER STUDIES
According to the studies of famous Indian philosopher ‘Vatsyayana’, a woman should be a specialist in cooking, knowledge of medicine, recitation spinning, grinding, etc. Even in Buddhism, Jainism, and Christians, there was some liberal view on women’s education, as they do not consider gender in uniting with God.
We can imagine the plight of women by one of the shlokas of Tulsidas where he writes “Dhol, gawar, shudra, pashu, Nari, ye sab tadan ke Adhikari” which means one has to beat the animals, illiterates, lower castes, and women. This system results in various problems like early motherhood, repeated birth, weak health of mothers, high rate of maternal mortality, etc.
One more reason for the decline in women’s status and freedom was that Indians don’t want to shadow down their women from cruel Muslim invaders. Love and inter-caste marriages were not permissible. Women have to be dependent on male members for their survival.
WOMEN & THEIR RIGHTS
According to some scholars, women were possessing property rights, and the woman was entitling to get her husband’s property after the death of her husband in case she has no son. Even daughters also had the right to succeed in the properties of the widow. Sati was obligatory. Lack of education, loss of access to their streedhan/ dowry made them ineffective and vulnerable to exploitation.
Women were helpless to take any decisions regarding political, social, or economic matters. The best suitable place for women was home. Muslims were following the tradition of Polygamy. Men were supposing women just as an object to satisfy the sexual desires of male-only. Like Muslim customs, Hindus also started the system of polygamy. Pardah pratha takes place by the influence of Muslim custom. Now women and girls were supposed to hide.
RESTRICTIONS
Restrictions were imposed on Widow Remarriage. Society was supposing women to live a devout life on the title of their husbands. These conditions seem pathetic. This cruelty on widows leads to committing Sati. Rani Padmavati referred as a known identity to this pratha. Instead of living, considering Sati was a better option in Hindu society. The custom of Devdasi also took place in medieval Indian history. In this system, the people were considering women as the brides of God. Actually, this was an example of the sexual exploitation of women in the name of religion.
Some philosophers observed that Hindus accepted some changes in their clothing, food habits, social customs in the influence of Muslims. The lower strata of the population were remaining free from some social evils like purdah, divorce, etc. women were free to remarry. Up to a certain extent, Muslim women had enjoyed more freedom in the context of divorce and remarriage. They can have their share in their husband’s property even.
Conclusion
The status of women had degenerate in society during this period and they suffered from social evils.
In medieval times, just like caste arrangements, benevolence was also deeply establishing. Strict restrictions were imposed on the movements, bodies, and legal and economic rights of women. The position of women was comparatively better among the Muslim and ‘lower caste’ communities, and though almost every community was already organized following the laws of patriarchy. In times such as our own, where ahistorical images rule our consciousness, such renderings of history by historians like Habib assume vital importance.
