Never imagined such a slacker and lawless attitude: The High Court of Andhra Pradesh has found eight IAS officers guilty of contempt.

In re v. Gopal Krishna Dwivedi, the Andhra Pradesh High Court recently held eight Indian Administrative Service (IAS) personnel guilty of contempt of court for intentional disobedience of an interim order.

WHAT COURT SAID?

On the petitioner’s plea for a pardon, Justice Battu Devanand sentenced;  the contemnors to two weeks of simple jail and a $1,000 fine, but on the petitioner’s request for a pardon based on their age and services given, the Court ordered them to perform community service.

The judge ordered the defendants to visit one of the charity hostels designated to them on;  one Sunday a month for the next 12 months, spend time with the students and wards to stimulate them, and arrange a lavish lunch or dinner with their own money.

Their complaint was that; if the same  built on school grounds, the ambience of the primary school would be ruined by; the daily movement of so many people, so jeopardising the school’s healthy environment.

However, the Court  notified that; the respondents had begun building on the school grounds when the case scheduled for hearing next. All but two respondents failed to file counter-affidavits after a year had passed.

Justice Devanand stated that;  it  common knowledge that children enrolling in government and local body schools came from poor and middle-class households, and that;  the respondents’ inaction demonstrated their lack of concern for these individuals.

Despite the fact that; the respondents found guilty, their apology  accepted and the penalty reduced.

The court ordered the defendants to send a photo of their monthly visits to the Registrar (judicial).  The Registry will be forced to reopen the case, if they don’t follow  their promise.
