National Education Policy; It is not necessary to made KANNADA a mandatory subject; Central government to Karnataka High Court
The Central government informed the Karnataka High Court on Wednesday that the National Education Policy, 2020 (NEP) did not need regional languages to be declared compulsory in higher education [Shivakumar KG and Ors vs State of Karnataka and Ors].
The Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi and Justice SR Krishna Kumar underlined that; in view of the Centre’s plea, the government directives dated August 7, 2021 and September 15, 2021, which; attempted to make Kannada obligatory for graduate students, delayed till the next of hearing.
The Court considering a petition to overturn two government decisions that; made learning Kannada compulsory for students at the graduate level. The petition also asked for a declaration that; the National Education Policy does not prevent students from choosing any specific language as part of their higher education course.
At a previous hearing, the Court stated that; making Kannada a compulsory subject in higher education would cause complications for students.
In its ruling, a division bench comprising; Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi and Justice S R Krishna Kumar stated, “In view of the Central Government’s position that; Kannada is not necessary to made a mandatory subject in higher studies for; the purpose of implementing National Education Policy,”
