Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Saturday said that the Indian Constitution does not force its citizens to choose between rights or culture. The CJI was speaking at the Constitution Day event held at the Supreme Court. During his speech, he said that the Constitution includes social, cultural and religious aspects in its goal to achieve a democratic society.
“Constitution does not force its citizens to choose between their rights or culture. Rather it includes the social, cultural and religious aspects in its goal to achieve a democratic society,” he said. The Constitution adopts the principle of accommodation, the CJI added, and urged citizens to be accommodative towards one another.
“This is what is principle of accommodation which is the ability to simultaneously apply principles which seem to be in conflict with one another but it is different from compromise as it includes concessions.
We must uphold the idea of unity in diversity by upholding and being accommodative towards one another.” he stated. The CJI also touched upon the history of the Constitution and initiatives to improve access to justice in the country.
