Families of people who commit suicide within 30 days of testing positive for COVID are entitled to compensation, the government tells the Supreme Court
In response to the Supreme Court’s order that the Centre reconsider its decision not to count suicide deaths as CoVID 19 deaths even if CoVID 19 was present, the Centre has filed an affidavit stating that the families of those who committed suicide within 30 days of being diagnosed positive will be entitled to ex gratia.
“It is respectfully submitted that this Hon’ble Court may pass suitable directions in this regard, whereby the family members of people who commit suicide within 30 days of being diagnosed as COVID-19 positive as per MoH&F/ICMR guidelines will also be entitled to financial help as granted under SDRF in accordance with the Guidelines dated 11.09.2021 issued by NDMA under Section 12 will be entitled to avail financial help as granted under SDRF in accordance with the Guidelines dated 11.09.2021 issued by NDMA.
According to the standards, deaths caused by poisoning, suicide, homicide, and accidents; among other causes, will not be classified as COVID-19 deaths, even if COVID-19 is present.
