Jharkhand Judge Death: Attack on Judiciary
Uttam Anand, an Additional District Judge in Jharkhand, was killed by a vehicle on his morning jog in Dhanbad on July 28.
A vehicle driving on an empty road purposely hit the judge and; drove away as he was out for a morning walk.
Unsettling CCTV images of the judge serving as an Additional District and Sessions Judge in Dhanbad, being run down by a vehicle have surfaced, implying that the death was planned.
According to reports, he was hearing several high-profile criminal cases. He recently turned down a mobster from Uttar Pradesh’s bail application; which is being held in connection with a high-profile murder case in Dhanbad.
Senior Advocate Vikas Singh, the Supreme Court Bar Association president, had brought the incident up before the CJI yesterday, seeking the Court to take suo moto action.
Which in simple terms mean when a court decides to pursue a case on its own, such as in circumstances of severe negligence on the side of public authorities or the government, or whenever the court sees fit.
After CCTV evidence of the incident showed the vehicle purposefully veering on an empty road to hit judge Uttam Anand, the Dhanbad Police have filed a murder police complaint.
Two people who were allegedly riding in the vehicle at the time of the collision have been arrested. The vehicle was eventually found in the nearby Giridh neighborhood on Wednesday night.
The Dhanbad Police have also created a 14-member special investigation team to look into the matter. Which will be led by an additional director general of police. The alleged killers of judge Uttam Anand have yet to divulge their motive behind such an incident.
suo motu cognizance
Supreme Court on 30 July 2021, took suo motu cognizance of the killing of the judge. A bench led by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana ordered Jharkhand’s Chief Secretary and; Director General of Police to give a report on the status of the investigation within one week. This is the attack on judiciary.
